Little Lake, Big Dreams
The little lake, water lapping, little future
Local lads, big dreams and ambitions
Far away fields were greener than the stoney ones of home,
On America they set their heart as their mission.
New land, new opportunities, they built a new little town
Done well, it grew beyond that from which they came
Where they had played where swans wings beat the waters of the Corrib
Also of the little lake of the village to which they gave their new city its name.
Menlo Park was a “big house” in the Galway village of Menlo – “Mionloch” meanling “Little Lake” in Irish – from where two natives of the village emigrated to America and founded a city of the same name over there. Facebook have some of their server farms and HQ in Menlo Park in California, showing what the small creation of men who overcame lack of opportunity with ambition can become, way beyond even their dreams. A plaque to them was erected in the village at the cemetery by the pier where their ancestors and relations are buried. Its little known claim to fame is that it was where Google was founded way back in the infancy of the modern internet
