Fate Finds Frank

Young Frank his mind had set
To seek a living on the wild wild sea,
His mother was set against it
Saying, none of his folk had sailed: why he?
“Done leave, dont leave” the the widow cried!
But the widow cried in vain,
The waves had stolen the young mans heart
On land he could not remain.

They walked to the chapel on a Sunday
As they went to weekly mass
The old woman pointed out as an omen
Everything that looked odd that they passed.
A wicked crow sat on the churchyard wall
Showed no fear and did not move
“Thats the Morrighan of Death” the widow cried
“Cant you see the point I prove?”

The boy was lost with his thoughts
Of riches and ladies of another land
He felt a tear from his mothers eyes fall
As she kissed his shaking hand.
The crow onto a tombstone flew
It cried loud as on it it landed…
The widow to her son herself threw
Saying “Thats a sign you will be stranded”

They walked home silent as the night drew in
Cold, bitter cold as such nights are
The clouds were thick over the hidden moon
Everywhere else there glistened a distant star.

Have your say...
