A cautionary tale of love, loans, and a mermaids revenge from the Carribean!!!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

H\u00f8gensborg, a style of house it is assumed was built in the tale.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Once upon a time in Friedensborg
\nThere lived a Dane who was old,
\nHe desired a mansion to build for a maiden
\nBut had no dame either, it was his distress, it was told.<\/p>\n

In the days when the guts in St Croix ran wet
\nUnlike them being dry as they are today
\nIn the Bethlehem Gut he met a mermaid
\nSo goes the story the old people say.<\/p>\n

The mermaid was beautiful, the mermaid was rich,
\nOur old Dane of who before we spoke,
\nHe fell for the maiden – her beauty and riches!!! –
\nThe latter becuase he was broke.<\/p>\n

She lent him the money to build his big house,
\nHe built his house there big and tall!
\nA man of romance in order to say thanks
\nHe put the relief of the mermaid on the wall.<\/p>\n

The money he owed, he his new house to all showed,
\nNone knew how the money to her was to be repaid,
\nHis housewarming went well so the folks tell…
\nTill the mermaid her way to the house she made!<\/p>\n

When she stood there, all glistening and fair,
\nHe to find an excuse found it hard to talk,
\nHe meant to her no snub by no invite to the dance and the grub
\nHe simply assumed as a fish she couldnt walk!<\/p>\n

Well women at best when put to the test
\n– Advice comes to all men from old men through the ages –
\nA glib excuse it is little use
\nIs sating a wild womans rages!<\/p>\n

The mermaid she fumed in a rage all consumed,
\nShe struck the old Dane square a box in the head!
\nHe fell to the floor, and moved little more…
\nHe was more then heartbroken – he was dead!<\/p>\n

The mermaid then left the guests there bereft…
\nThe likes by them before nor since was seen…
\nIts said she still swims today, in the waters off the bay
\nWhere the sculpture looks on at the waters blue green!<\/p>\n

More say the tale isnt true like a boy who once knew
\nAn local man who the tale to him told
\n“How could she walk”, the boy asked as they did talk
\n“She just could” was the answer given by the man who was old.<\/p>\n

”’Me know it’ nebber go before,” the locals say in their creole way
\nThey have for each other as language for speaking
\nMeaning hindsight is easy and of little use
\nIf conventional sense to a legend of magic one is seeking.<\/p>\n

So if you fall for the charms of a mermaids arms
\nAnd borrow her money to boot…
\nInvite her to the ball, or to the floor you will fall
\nAll too soon to be buried in your funeral suit!<\/p>\n
