The route my parents chose is now the Wild Atlantic Way, so they were trendsetters in a way long long before their time in 1964!!! The poet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advertiser.ie\/Galway\/article\/94547\/the-poet-who-went-mad-on-inishboffin?utm_source=more&#038;utm_medium=web&#038;utm_campaign=readmore\">Thoedore Roethke had a nervous breakdown here<\/a>, on Inisbofin.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Its beauty lost on a farmers eye<br \/>\nWho honeymooned what is now the Wild Atlantic Way<br \/>\nBefore tourism was much of a thing<br \/>\nSpoke of the western coast that distant day<br \/>\nTo his young bride who saw both its beauty and his point<br \/>\nIt was a phrase with which Ive grown<br \/>\nOf a place Ive grown to love<br \/>\nIts wild remoteness, overgrown.<\/p>\n<p>I was not the first poet there<br \/>\n&#8211; For among its stones they are born, grow, and die &#8211;<br \/>\nI was not the first either to visit<br \/>\nThere were other long before I<br \/>\nToday forgotten, more only known<br \/>\nWho know of a circle, follow works of a few&#8230;<br \/>\nAll have their favourites, as have I<br \/>\nOf their lives and works above others knew.<\/p>\n<p>To the west from the West he came<br \/>\nTo the Old Land of centuries before<br \/>\nFrom which his forefathers once had left<br \/>\nAlong with millions hopeful more.<br \/>\nThe fighting muses got the better of his brain<br \/>\nHe lost whatever senses he had<br \/>\nCarted off in a boat to Ballinasloe<br \/>\nHaving found a great place to go mad!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Background: I grew up with stories of my father on his honeymoon on the west coast describing it as &#8220;a great place to go mad&#8221;. The Guardai done an excellent job where they as a resource were used correctly, as a service to the who community for the common good of all, as opposed to Banagher, where they were misused to enfore the bigotires of a small but both vocal and powerful minority.
