Mary Darley, in missionary work in China, told the story of a lady so devoted to Bhuddism, that she lost her life in a flood. I retell the story here in verse, the original can be read on archive.org<\/a><\/u>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The waters rose as the waters do
\nEvery few years with the monsoon rains
\nThe villagers flew as the villagers knew
\nThe waters take all that remains.
\nBut there was about a woman devout
\nWho in her idols and Gods put her trust
\nTo the temples she went and there was content
\nSitting at the feet of a Buddha bust.<\/p>\n

The waters came swirling with her prayer wheel whirling
\nChants to the Buddha she said
\nThe locals in town at her looked down
\nGlad to see she as yet wasn’t dead.
\nThey were to be found on the high ground
\nOn the slopes of the forested hills
\nIt was a safe place to go for generations they did know
\nTo survive the wild weathers angers and wills.<\/p>\n

The waters rose farther, her skirts she did gather,
\nClimbed up the statue clinging to its neck,
\nIt became unstable, to stay upright wasn’t able
\nCollapsed face down and broke, as a wreck.
\nFor many a day for the woman swept away
\nThe villagers after the floods looked and searched
\nThe preachers declared to a people dismayed
\nShe died as she worshipped the idol on which she perched.<\/p>\n
