{"id":500,"date":"2012-07-02T16:14:43","date_gmt":"2012-07-02T16:14:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/writingsinrhyme.com\/?p=500"},"modified":"2014-09-06T16:16:20","modified_gmt":"2014-09-06T16:16:20","slug":"the-excommunication-of-st-columba","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/writingsinrhyme.com\/index.php\/the-excommunication-of-st-columba\/","title":{"rendered":"The Excommunication of St. Columba"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A sinner as is every man<br \/>\nColumba for his family had great pride<br \/>\nSwift of tongue and hot of temper<br \/>\nHe challenged all who in his path did stride.<\/p>\n<p>At Cool Drewny where Connacht and Ulster meet<br \/>\nMet the kings in battle swords drawn for blood<br \/>\nAnd Columba, who prayers to heaven for victory made<br \/>\nDeclared the sins for the slaying on his soul stain should<\/p>\n<p>And so the battle did commence and savage was<br \/>\nTo avenge the death of one who as sheltered was kept<br \/>\nFrom the king by Columba in a place holy<br \/>\nOnly to aside by the kings soldiers to be swept<\/p>\n<p>And they killed his charge, and Columba declared<br \/>\nThe king would have to take his shield<br \/>\nAnd as he humbled Columba and violated the church that day<br \/>\nHe would be humbled and punished on the battlefield.<\/p>\n<p>And his guard set by Dermot he did escape<br \/>\nAnd his way to his own folk he made<br \/>\nAnd exited their angers with the tale<br \/>\nAnd to raise arms in battle in revenge them he bade.<\/p>\n<p>At Taillte a Synod met him to discuss<br \/>\nFor we was known for causing the shedding of Christian blood<br \/>\nAnd it was declared in judgment of him that was made<br \/>\nExcommunicated: that sentence on him to be put: it would!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A sinner as is every man Columba for his family had great pride Swift of tongue and hot of temper He challenged all who in his path did stride.
