Looking back through photos, a shot of Lough Nabelwy reminded me of one of my favourite walks in North Longford, and of other travels. No matter how exotic where we travel to, there truly is nowhere like home, especially in these concerning times.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Shoreside by a Longford lake,
\nTowards Leitrim I look there sitting…
\nSummers day of heat, stormy clouds beneath,
\nRain threatening never fell, bar spitting.<\/p>\n

Sitting, I pondered on the name,
\nFrom the language of times gone by…
\nWhen folk liked who knew of little bar America
\nNever got to travel like I.<\/p>\n

Who have been to Faro and Vrsac,
\nSkopje to the menhirs of Carnac…
\nYet as interesting to me who all this did see
\nAs much was Aughnaliffes dolmen, when I came back…<\/p>\n

I’ve walked across the River Sava
\nI’ve eaten the Danubes fresh caught fish…
\nYet tonight in lockdown in Galway
\nTo be lakeside in Longford, is what I wish.<\/p>\n

Travel broadens the mind, they say, its true:
\nIts good far countries among far cultures to be.
\nAs lovely and interesting as other lands are
\nIts the beauty in your own home you see.<\/p>\n

When you return, to be among your own,
\nThere to sit and chat content,
\nSwapping tales with other folk who far have been,
\nOf the places that you went.<\/p>\n

The shell damaged buildings of Belgrade,
\nVrsac fort upon the hill,
\nNeath where I met the family from Athlone
\nWho knew my friend, that fort stands still<\/p>\n

Where the people for a summers stroll
\nTo its heights families walk
\nThe Church of St Theodore build to give thanks
\nFor fruitful winefields, to folk I talk.<\/p>\n

When swapping tales of other lands
\nBut this land Id not foresake
\nLovely and all happiest Ive been
