What has a mythical Celtic God figure, a river monster and two Larry Cunningham fans have in common: Leitrim ! It i=indeed is lovely to spite what the two John Cartys said about it<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

“You’d think it was lovely if you didn’t know it”
\nSaid John Carty to John Carty one day…
\nThough he loved the land where he was from
\nIt was the joke that he would say
\nAs they heard local singer Larry Cunningham
\nThe praises of Leitrim in song sing
\nSo I heard it as a child,
\nThe story to the mind does bring
\nAnother, of Parletheon and his wife
\nWho arrived at lovely Glenade
\nAnd one, which one I do not know,
\nOf its beauty a remark made…
\nThe other, just out of spite
\nAs bickering couples are known to do –
\nSaid it was horrible to their eye
\nThough it was beautiful they knew…<\/p>\n

Ah yes, there are stories in the area: tell
\nOf a woman by waters edge washing clothes,
\nFrom the deep a monster to her came –
\nSomething like the Loch Ness lad I’d suppose…
\nIt killed her there where her clothes lay,
\nHer husband killed the beast,
\nBefore it could on his lovely wife
\nAs if a mere fish, heartily feast.
\nIts partner merged from the lake,
\nChased him and his brother over field and ditch and lane,
\nTill they cornered and killed it too:
\nNo more were ever seen again.<\/p>\n

Was it true, as the stone carving on her headstone says…
\nFrom out of the waters mist…
\nSuch a beast came, and such fight was had…
\nThat creatures like that exist?
\nOr were the men clever to a man,
\nHaving killed the poor woman in a fight,
\nConcocted a tale to fool the gullible folk there
\nSo from law they’d not have to take flight?<\/p>\n

We know not, we know so we tell the tales…
\nAs we know of Partheon before them,
\nAs of John Carty and his cousin John,
\nTold by his poet son long after the passing of both of them!<\/p>\n
