Stonehenge is to be renamed BallyStonehenge as its actually from Westmeath…<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

In the dark and distant past
\nFrom where memories but hazy last
\n– And vary in the telling –
\nSome truthful as to them were told
\nMore as full of lies as to the teller was sold
\n– Such is history!<\/p>\n

Magical stones from Africa brought to Ireland
\nTo Uisneach by Giants who sought a monument grand
\n– and some say this at all is not so –
\nMerlin himself: to remember his heroes dead (1)
\nTook them by magic when force failed by some it\u2019s said:
\nSure, we will never know!<\/p>\n

More say a woman more cunning than civil,
\nTried to do a deal to sell the Giants Ring to the devil:
\nThe conwoman ended up being conned!
\nThe devil he always wins
\nIf man is holy or man sins\u2026
\nHe will claim his bounty and bond!<\/p>\n

We want our six counties back
\nSome chance of that alas alack
\n– Though some see hope where there is none –
\nMaybe too be aught to right
\nFor Stonehenge it is Irish by right
\nFrom Westmeath came each stone! (2)<\/p>\n

But there is something we can do
\nStake our claim that\u2019s bold and true
\nThough (like most politics!) based on a mere story! –
\nRename Salisbury Plane in Revenge
\nAs Maigh Stonehenge! (3)
\n– Claim it as our 33rd County!<\/p>\n

Background:<\/strong>
\n(1) One legend states the stones of Stonehenge came from Killare in Westmeath, the Hill of Uisneach. When Merlins army failed to take them by force, he took them by majic, wanting “The Giants Ring” to make a monument to an army of his that died in battle.<\/p>\n

(2) Another legend says a Westmeath woman sold them to the devil.<\/p>\n

Which is true? We will never know. But we may make a few quid from the story from the Americans!<\/p>\n
