Rebel slept under boughs of ditches
\nWhere the wet cold bog kept him safe from harm
\nFrom wind, from those who sought him as their quarry
\nHe curled up, insomuch as he could be warm…
\nWhat were his dreams – his nightmares fierce
\nHis family killed, missing, the heat of battle?
\nWe know not the sleeping rebel dreamed
\nNo more do we know the dreams of cattle
\nAt slumber neath such bushes there
\nNameless, as the skies break to the dawn
\nTo freedom, or the chance of it, freedom must be risked
\nFate must be chased, thinks the rebel, as he stretches to yawn.<\/p>\n
