The late Tom Moran of Lusmagh<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

From youth, from Lusmagh with his stock
\nAmong the traders there
\nFrom far and near, home and abroad
\nAll met at Banagher Fair.
\nBargained, argued, deals were struck
\nSettled by spit on the hand
\nMore failed to agree price both thought was fair
\nAs each one held his stand.<\/p>\n

Times changed, more modern progressive times
\nSaw the car defeat the cart
\nThe drover drove big lorries now
\nNot to the fair, but to the cattle mart.
\nBut the horsetraders still annually assembled
\nBeneath Rynagh’s and Paul’s church steeples there
\nOn a street long steeped in history
\nOf the Annual Great Banagher Street Fair.<\/p>\n

The last men standing, so they said
\nNo more pigs, cattle or sheep
\nAs there was in centuries past
\nBut faithful horsetraders the traditions keep
\nOnce three fairs Banagher town had
\nThe Great September some three days long…
\nNow its one day… but what a day
\nTo walk among the throng.<\/p>\n

A throng among whom he hoped to walk
\nHe had his horses ready to trot the street
\nBut fate and God had other plans
\nWe at no more fairs would meet.
\nWe thought how fragile life is
\nHow sudden death can strike the blow
\nLaughed how he must be enjoying meeting long passed traders
\nFrom the Banagher Fairs of long ago.<\/p>\n

A hush fell upon the assembled folk
\nThe Angelus bells rung at noon
\nHeads bowed, even the horses we mostly in a hush
\nThat lasted long, yet over too soon.
\nLike life itself, a friend remembered
\nAnother one of which good tales to tell…
\nWe shall meet again as all must do…
\nWhen we cross life’s final fence as well!<\/p>\n
