{"id":4197,"date":"2017-12-04T22:56:56","date_gmt":"2017-12-04T22:56:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.writingsinrhyme.com\/?p=4197"},"modified":"2017-12-04T22:57:37","modified_gmt":"2017-12-04T22:57:37","slug":"betrayal-of-the-brothers-grimes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/writingsinrhyme.com\/index.php\/betrayal-of-the-brothers-grimes\/","title":{"rendered":"Betrayal of the Brothers Grimes"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>In the wake of the 1798 Rebellion, the brothers Grimes, all of whom were executed by the British, were betrayed by a member of their company, about whom the Northman who had organised them had warned before abandoning them. One of the group, a freemason called Campbell, was said to have got off the charge by giving the masonic sign of distress, and so he in the folklore telling ios often in insinuation more than direct accusation accused of being the betrayer. However, the name is known of who did give the word to the Crown &#8211; but it will not be repeated as many are alive today who are related to them.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1547\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1547\" style=\"width: 5312px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.writingsinrhyme.com\/index.php\/she-walks-not-the-paths-i-find-familiar\/20150318_141658\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1547\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.writingsinrhyme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/20150318_141658.jpg\" alt=\" Bog at Edenmore, Ballinamuck, Co. Longford &#8211; many rebels of the 1798 Rebellion perished here while more used the cover to escape.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At Ballinamuck defeated<br \/>\nThe battle lost and won<br \/>\nIn British style British justice<br \/>\nMust be seen, it was said, to be done.<\/p>\n<p>The trials, they were just for show<br \/>\nFor the condemned there was no hope<br \/>\nThe cases were closed before they were opened<br \/>\nThe defendants were for the rope<\/p>\n<p>What could the judge do in his wisdom<br \/>\nWithout risking his own neck in the noose<br \/>\nWhat could he do for those there for who<br \/>\nLegal argument was no use?<\/p>\n<p>One man, a mason, stories tell<br \/>\nAs in wonder the others there stared<br \/>\nThe sign of distress showed to the judge<br \/>\nUpon which his life was spared.<\/p>\n<p>Some tell the tale as if to say<br \/>\nHis word was what betrayed the Brothers Grimes<br \/>\nIt was not so, the fact we know<br \/>\nIn these more peaceful times<\/p>\n<p>But the cruel word is sometimes spoken<br \/>\nBy which such things are surmised<br \/>\nBut those would have sold out the Baptist himself<br \/>\nBy whom Christ in the waters was baptised.<\/p>\n<p>Bad luck to those who for money<br \/>\nGave the information and so fate was set<br \/>\nThe man Campbell blamed for saving his own neck<br \/>\nWhen the Grimes brothers met their death<\/p>\n<p>For it was not the mason among their ranks<br \/>\nOf whom the Northman had warned<br \/>\nBefore abandoning them, being compromised<br \/>\nHis warnings derided and scorned.<\/p>\n<p>Barely remembered in our times<br \/>\nWho by all in their day were known<br \/>\nDid they know who gave them away<br \/>\nAs we today have known?<\/p>\n<p>Did the judge want to set them all free<br \/>\nBut could only his membership use<br \/>\nTo save his own neck from the rope to which he condemned<br \/>\nThat no legal argument could refuse?<\/p>\n<p>I know not that but I do know this<br \/>\nAs the wind in the leaves has played<br \/>\nIt was not by a Masons word<br \/>\nThe Grimes brothers were betrayed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the wake of the 1798 Rebellion, the brothers Grimes, all of whom were executed by the British, were betrayed by a member of their company, about whom the Northman who had organised them had warned before abandoning them.
