Manchester Martyrs Commemoration

\n150th anniversary<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That Lusmagh man, brave as they come
\nAs are the stock from where he was from
\nThey set their prisoners for to free
\nOn the streets on Manchester city<\/p>\n

Fate, as she does, dealt a cruel hand
\nThe constable at the door did stand
\nRefused to on command the door to open
\nShot as the lock was blown to free the men.<\/p>\n

Great the pressure on the police
\nTo capture the shooters and not to cease
\nUntil an Irishman was found to be hung
\nHe he to his death on gallows swung.<\/p>\n

Larkin on hearing he was to die
\nStood a proud man with strong eye
\nAs Christ on the cross he spoke of the Jury men
\nSaying “As I am a dying man… may God forgive them”…<\/p>\n

They died as Irishmen, and what a death
\nFor wrong the length on the rope was set
\nAs through the trap door they op opening were flung
\nThe stopped, half alive, half dead, half hung.<\/p>\n

William Calcraft, the hangman, who couldn’t hang a coat
\nHung to Larkins legs as in horror the press wrote
\nOf the Irishmen who as before their death did stand
