One tenth of all – the parsons share
\nFrom cows in pasture to poultry flock
\nFrom grain blowing in the breeze
\nTo cloth weaved and other stock…<\/p>\n

Once upon a time in Romsey its said
\nIn the north aisle the parson collected
\nHis allocated tenth of what those around had
\nBe of his faith or his faith not respected.<\/p>\n

One woman, and her child had come
\nTo be baptised, as was then the law
\nLoftily, the childs name, the parson enquired
\nAs the ragged family before him saw.<\/p>\n

You should know, the mother replied
\nWith a manner both coy and mild
\nWith a twinkling eye on being asked why
\nAs its the tenth, the baby is the parsons child!<\/p>\n
