Stephen James Smith, the founder of the once epic Gl\u00f3r Sessions in the International Bar did a verse for the St. Patricks Festival on the theme of “My Ireland”. His verse gives his take on the country, making references to euphanisms for Ireland and dawing on verses of other poets referring to the country.<\/p>\n

I them thought to do my version, as much on why the country does not follow the new alternative voice for Ireland when it knows it needs change, and noted the waryness that the people use to the new voices as much as the old, choosing the devil they know it seems, and it may be through grassroots reform of these as opposed to replacement that we may get a fairer Ireland I think.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\"Church<\/a>
Church at Edgeworthstown – to spite scandals our faith is still important in Ireland<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

i<\/strong>
\nMy Ireland – we rarely protest
\nSeeing an agenda beyond what we support
\nWe do not trust those with the agenda
\nWho say the right things on the news report.
\nIf promised just half of their agenda
\nOn how much of our cause would they compromise
\nThey would sell us all out in an instant
\nThat sad truth my Ireland does realize.<\/p>\n

ii<\/strong>
\nWe saw them before at independence
\nWhen they bleated about great freedom for all
\nSeems they think it is better for the poor
\nWhen they by their own oppressed and made small.
\nAh yes, Traveller and the Sapilpin
\nWho found work and respect in landlords days
\nFound a cold house though they too Catholic
\nSome freedom for them in these modern days.<\/p>\n

iii<\/strong>
\nWe see demanding gombeen politicians
\nRant about horses to put in their place
\nThe Travelling people and inner city folk
\nWho keep horses on the common space.
\nIts safety for others and the horses
\nThat belong in the country not there
\nSimilar is said about that old tradition
\nThe annual village and town horse fair.<\/p>\n

\"Hoult<\/a>iv<\/strong>
\nIn Banagher and also Ballinasloe
\nLatter a Green Fair, the former of the Street
\nMovements to stop them have had their say
\nBut its our tradition that they wont defeat.
\nIn urban planning stables for horse owners
\nShould be planned for, and commonage green
\nBut that wont keep the councillors happy
\nWho strong against Travellers want to be seen.<\/p>\n

v<\/strong>
\nThen in Galway here in my Ireland of today
\nAnother gombeen of the New Labour left
\nTo get the votes of the middle classes
\nRanted about Roma Hair braiders, the only niche left
\nNo, this was not Oliver J Flanagan
\nOr a Donald Trump of the modern age
\nThey wouldnt even do that in North Longford
\nWhere a similar stooge seeks to strut that stage.<\/p>\n

vi<\/strong>
\nMy Ireland – we look at the new left
\nIts not the left of old that we had known
\nThat got women the vote – land ownership
\nA country and a nation of our own.
\nThe new left is obsessed with abortion
\nClaim its not eugenics: a human right
\nWe’ve been here before decades ago
\nWe recoil, baulk in horror at the sight<\/p>\n

\"A<\/a>
A boycott would have been more appropriate than the pro life noisy protest where instead of making a point they made a nuisance of themselves. I boycotted it myself as I wrote about in “On Boycotting the Sean Mac Eoin Statue Unveiling<\/a>“<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

vii<\/strong>
\nOur own side, as they loudly proclaim to be
\n– The Jesus Joseph and Mary brigade –
\nThey speak not for me in their bigotry
\nWho made and still make single mothers afraid.
\nWho can blame girls for wanting abortion
\nTo keep from the family perceived shame
\nOf a bad, condemnative society
\nWho gossip, badmouth, deride and they blame<\/p>\n

viii<\/strong>
\nGirls, but rarely ever the fellow
\nWho often as not is unknown
\nIn our still chauvinistic society
\nThe girl is looked down on, left on her own.
\nIf its all right for men who have lovers
\nSo it should be for a woman then too
\nHer children should be accepted as equals
\nBut that is not what society does do.<\/p>\n

ix<\/strong>
\nTrue, in Ireland its not like it was
\nBut we still have a long long way to go
\nIf we are pro life we must accept all
\nLet us no prejudice to the unmarried show.
\nAt risk of committing a little blasphemy
\nSure Mary Herself, to all around was unmarried
\nThough Virgin as we believe in our faith
\nHer child our lord, illegitimate that she carried.<\/p>\n

\"Savita<\/a>
Savita Halappanavar – her tragic death<\/a> led to an anti Catholic Marianesque demonstrations in favour of abortion<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

x<\/strong>
\nHere in Galway town once upon a time
\nA mother lost her child not long ago
\nThey asked it be removed to save her life
\nWas answered “Irelands Catholic” as no.
\nThe left as it presents itself was preaching
\nBlamed the 8th Amendment and led the call
\nIt be repealed as a step to abortion
\nAs they want it, free and free for all.<\/p>\n

xi<\/strong>
\nThere is no guarantee it would have saved Savita
\nThough it was the best option to save her life
\nHer husband called for it and was ignored
\nBy ignorant staff as he pleaded for his wife.
\nThe amendment says “where not practical”
\nAlas, for the unborn child all was lost
\nBeing on its way it can only be hastened
\nNot stopped, the mothers life the cost.<\/p>\n

xii<\/strong>
\nNot one on the left cried to the racism
\nThe unseen elephant that was in the room
\nWhich normally when arguing against common sense
\nIs their first call as marching tune.
\nIf she was white and if she was Irish
\nDo you think such like would be to her said?
\nBut no an ignorant lady doctor
\nKept the dying mother in her place instead.<\/p>\n

xiii<\/strong>
\nBut stating that truth will not suit the slogan
\nThat on their placards the trendy protesters wrote
\nSure its all about the marketing really
\nThe parties more extreme to get the vote.
\nSo they made a football of the tragedy
\nContinue to do so to this day
\nBut my Ireland, cynical, see through it
\nInto their hands it refuses to play.<\/p>\n

\nMy Ireland, sometimes we go to church
\nIn aisle before seating give genuflection
\nWe oppose abuse coverups of clergy
\nBut we for clerics and faith have affection.
\nAbuse and cover up is throughout society
\nThough of the clergy being moral we expected more
\nThere will be more to come from all sections
\nThat will make simple the problems we have had before.<\/p>\n

xv<\/strong>
\nThe new left and atheists kick the pope
\nSay things if the Orange Order they did state
\nThey could be reported and prosecuted
\nPunished for acts and speeches of hate.
\nMy Ireland ignore the gibbering nyeucks
\nTo their provocation will not rise
\nThey’ve little more to them than their agenda
\nMy Ireland, experienced, does realise.<\/p>\n

\nMy Ireland sees the unions want more for the well paid
\nWhile the lower paid are told keep to their REA
\nThe business students of ten years ago
\nAre the managers now who deny fair pay.
\nSo they have their banners and march down Shop Street
\nWe look cynically as in cafes we relax
\nSip our coffee to the ceiling throw our eyes
\nBefore next day we work and pay our tax.<\/p>\n

\"Taxpayers<\/a>
Taxpayers evicted by the banks who were bailed out by taxpayers – Modern Ireland: why not bring back the Land Commission as it worked for the landlords it would for the banks, people would get to hold their homes, the banks books would be better moving troubled accounts from them and the state would get the profits.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\nMy Ireland resists the media in their call
\nThat we should rent for life the family home
\nIts not for that that the Land League fought
\nThe stood for each families home their own.
\nBack in the day before we flew our own flag
\nGo to America was the medias call
\nIrelands to poor for all bar the rich
\nSome freedom they wanted our heros to fight for and fall.<\/p>\n

xviii<\/strong>
\nMy Ireland strains under charlatans on the make
\nSaviors self appointed that serve an interest of their own
\nTis is not their land to change as they see fit
\nThis is all of ours, which we all own.
\nIreland has come through worse in the last hundred years
\nIt will come out of this bruised but stronger of the fight
\nThe charlatans, the chancer’s will fall away
\nLittle will change, but it will be more or less all right.<\/p>\n
