He and his Williamite party were condemned in the Irish parliment for these &#8220;generous&#8221; terms by the Ultras such as Bishop Anthony Dopping of Clonmacnois and Trinity College. These later held sway with Queen Anne leading to a breaking of most of the Treaty of Limerick and the Treaty of Galway&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A land worth fighting for, plains of Royal Meath<br \/>\nA kingdom, no, three, on his white steed<br \/>\nWith Dutch Dane and German as he did need<br \/>\nHe crossed Boyne&#8217;s narrow water<br \/>\nAnd faced James with French and Irish who with brave deed<br \/>\nRaced headlong both sides to slaughter.<\/p>\n<p>The battled ebbed, the battle flowed<br \/>\nThe battle sped up, and then it slowed<br \/>\nAnd in time, the field it showed<br \/>\nWilliam won the day<br \/>\nAnd the Irish troops, they soon it knowed<br \/>\nTheir King was away.<\/p>\n<p>The king to his servant said<br \/>\nThe Irish being cowardly had the battle fled<br \/>\nNot fighting as they should have, instead<br \/>\nOf standing their ground another bit<br \/>\nThe servant stated that in the race ahead<br \/>\nFrom the battle, the king beat the soldiers to it.<\/p>\n<p>And by Treaty inside Limericks wall<br \/>\nWhich is why the city by that name people still call<br \/>\nThe victor, and those who fall<br \/>\nMade solemn guarantee<br \/>\nThat those of faiths not of state, lands great and small<br \/>\nShall keep, and to worship be free.<\/p>\n<p>However those who succeeded the throne<br \/>\nHis traits of fairness had not shown<br \/>\nAnd freedom for Catholic was unknown<br \/>\nAnd to our shame<br \/>\nWe listened and spread the story that has grown<br \/>\nThat for bigotry William was to blame.<\/p>\n<p>The Boyne was a battle of Kings<br \/>\nNot for faith, but for other things<br \/>\nFor power, and all that brings<br \/>\nTo he who wins<br \/>\nAnd fools, beats drums and songs sings<br \/>\nAnd in time will suffer for his sins.<\/p>\n<p>Sure he wanted freedom from Rome&#8217;s diktat<br \/>\nAs do us all, though Catholic for that<br \/>\nAnd that was all that he was at,<br \/>\nThough others round him at his prime<br \/>\nWaited their moment and at their places sat<br \/>\nAnd struck after his time.<\/p>\n<p>What thinks he when he sees made<br \/>\nIn his honour the Orange parade<br \/>\nBigot tunes by his subjects played<br \/>\nBy those he fought to free<br \/>\nHow they from his vision have strayed<br \/>\nBy opposing for all faiths liberty!<\/p>\n<p>He stated loud, he stated well<br \/>\nThe history books to us they tell<br \/>\nThat cavalry charge he ordered, and with the shell<br \/>\nHe fought to liberate Protestants, as they did call<br \/>\nHim to do so, and for it his troops fell<br \/>\nNot to oppress Catholics at all.<\/p>\n<p>And the men of 98<br \/>\nWho wished for freedom for their faith<br \/>\nThis they often did state<br \/>\nThough Williamite<br \/>\nThey united to make a nation as a Republic great<br \/>\nWith their fellow Irishman, the Jacobite.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is a land worth fighting for&#8221; William of Orange &#8211; attrib. &#8220;I fought to liberate the Protestants, not oppress the Catholics&#8221; William of Orange King William, though made a champion of the Orange Order, was a fair general, making good Treatys with the surrendering cities.
