From country lanes and city streets, in defiance of a clergy who backed the Fascists, many young Irishmen took sides and fought for the Spanish Republic. In the face of Fascism, if Christ was on earth at that time, He too would have fought for the Republic!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

No crusaders they were, on holy war…
\nTo spread the word of God and the Good News,
\nAs such – but they laid down their lives,
\nFor a side that they did choose,
\nFor it preached the message of Christ,
\nNever once mentioning His name,
\nOf sharing with the poorest of the poor,
\nThey fought, and died, in Spain.<\/p>\n

Under cross banners high, the Falange,
\nBacked up with Nazi planes
\nFaced down our brave boys, other working class youths
\nAnd country boys from lanes
\nWho stories heard of clergy killed
\nMartyred for their faith
\nThought of Penal Laws coming to Spain,
\nDeluded, thought that the Falange were great.<\/p>\n

Our boys, they tilled the same fields,
\nThey came from the same earth, same land,
\nThey knew the church was more than clergy,
\nThey knew what Fascism had planned.
\nIf Christ himself was alive them days,
\nThough not a fighter as such was He,
\nHe would have taken arms for the republic,
\nThat ran a state like all men should be.<\/p>\n

Many Irish died for the Spanish Republic, which promoted more Christian values of share with the poor and the equality of man than did the fascism of the Flange which was based on the sin of Pride.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
