The sad and tragic story of the demise and the cause of the demise of Garristown Horse Fair, and as an apperant consequence, the village itself, from the Irish Folklore Commission<\/strong><\/a>, retold in verse below.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In Longford of old the story is told
\nClose by Gaige Crossroads there
\nNow fallen down, stood old Garristown
\nLong gone, both village and Horse Fair.<\/p>\n

From all around there would be found
\nBuyers and sellers of horses strong
\nEvery year they would appear
\nDeal and parley among the throng.<\/p>\n

The village did thrive as did arrive
\nTraders to stay in local cottages for the night
\nThe only fair in the county there
\nGarristown Fair of which I write.<\/p>\n

But men and long drinking, arguing and thinking
\nA dispute spilled into blows
\nThe way of the time to right a wrong was not a crime
\nThat was the way of hard people like those.<\/p>\n

It was not the first, and was not the worst
\nFight at a Fair like Garristown
\nBut the word fast spread of the fight and the man dead
\nThe fair it was shut down.<\/p>\n

Many years later on, the village was gone
\nResidents from its random set houses did depart
\nBetween hunger and emigration, story of our nation
\nThe village died, soon after the fair that was its heart.<\/p>\n

Now but a field, the odd item will yield
\nSuch as a shard of glass or a quorn of stone
\nOr tracks of a turf rick, turned up by the pick
\nThat someone long dead once did own.<\/p>\n

Maybe ghost silent walk, and argue and talk
\nPhantom horses still traded in Bradys field there
\nGarristown is long gone, its houses and everyone
\nThat once thrived with its famous Horse Fair.<\/p>\n
