In this archway the three Republican prisoners were executed by Free State forces at Birr Castle<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

On listening to a talk about three men killed by firing squad in Birr castle in 1922 during the Irish Civil War. They were killed for breaking and entering, not as a combatant element.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

No poems written, no ballads sung
\nYet feted as hero’s, from life’s bottom rung
\nShot as criminals, three men so young
\nTheir names largely today forgot<\/p>\n

In Birr Castle shot dead
\nAs a warning, so others instead
\nOn the homes of the wealthier dare not tread
\nAnd against others daren’t plot.<\/p>\n

Bought back as hero’s laid in grave
\nNames in honour as died their land to slave
\nShown to be actions of a knave
\nWho after their names denied<\/p>\n

From the role their names in time were taken
\nTheir valor once praised – all now forsaken
\nAs to their criminal deeds now others awaken
\nAs still their mothers cried.<\/p>\n

A fourth spared the fate of death
\nWho for being guilty the same should have been set
\nBeing of stock of not a kinder fate met
\nAnd lived to tell the tale.<\/p>\n

To be derided at the door
\nOf the families of comrades dead before
\nThat he should to be dead, was heard the roar
\nOver a heartbroken mothers wail.<\/p>\n

Another tragic tale of a tragic fight
\nWhere both were wrong and both were right
\nWhere to live was the only thing in these men’s sight
\nIt was not a crime of greed.<\/p>\n

And the war in which they were killed
\nTo be a lesson for others, by an army willed
\nWho of freedom to be slaves so much blood was spilled
