Empty feilds in Valentia Island in Kerry in Ireland where cattle used to graze. The EU pay famrers NOT to carry stock so as to create a blobal market for beef from Brazil, the price then too high for local Brazillians to afford who go hungry. The ranchers profit, as they sell the meat to the EU, and the smaller farmer goes bankrupt and ends up in the favela slums and a life of prostitution and drugs, drink and crime awaits the future generations.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The powers that be tell you that we
\nShould be happy with beef from Brazil
\nThey suppose its racist to oppose
\nWhat they want and their will.<\/p>\n

The powers that be tell you and me
\nIt gives farmers and families a fair living
\nTrade we should support, to our arguments they retort
\nAs a market to them we are giving.<\/p>\n

What we do not see is a child hungry
\nAs the price of beef in Brazil is too high
\nThe child – we will call her Majella, lives in a favela
\nHer father has now\u00a0turned to\u00a0crime to get on by.<\/p>\n

What we dont understand is that now the land
\nBelongs to the rancher, not the small farmer any more
\nHe lives now in the slum where the child sucks her thumb
\nTo hide the unger pains she never knew before.<\/p>\n

While life was tough, he had enough
\nHis family to – though plain the food – to feed
\nBut in times of plenty, her mother barely twenty

Thousands of miles away in Ireland today
\nWe in the supermarket buy Brazilian beef
\nWe think we should as we do good
\nYet we who think we are good are the thief.<\/p>\n

The farmer fears the bankers letter, hopes that times get better
\nOn grants to stay solvent he is now dependent
\nShould we leave the EU we suppose. lost the grants he will he knows
\nWho should be trading and working be independent.<\/p>\n

We are the fools who learned in schools
\nThat there was good for all in globalisation
\nThe third world will thrive, we help the poor stay alive
\nIt was the growth of global civilization.<\/p>\n

In Brazil we hear, the price of beef is too dear
\nFor the locals who buy who it to live need
\nIn Ireland we show the price is too low
\nTo keep a farm solvent, higher price wanted is not for greed.<\/p>\n

The politician chancers made rich the ranchers
\nWho in Brazil are taking the small farmers land
\nWho ends up in crime in the slums for all time
\nIt is just as globalisation planned.<\/p>\n

We are a market to buy, a consumer to live and die
\nAs a people we are for a use for others to be
\nWe are a citizen, we are Irishmen
\nNot just a consumer for corporation use to be.<\/p>\n

The powers that be tell us for a future to be
\nWe have to change our ways to be green
\nBuy I ask you how will beef shipped 5000 miles from Brazil
\nEco freindly possibly can be seen?<\/p>\n

I have a solution to end the polution
\nA fair living for Irish and Brazilian farmers to give
\nStop the export or beef for more than its local worth
\nLet the locals buy at a fair price so all can live.<\/p>\n

Not in a city slum as a criminal or a bum
\nBut as a farmer on their own land
\nThe ranchers I tell to go to hell
\nAs we make a future for farmers in Ireland.<\/p>\n

Our prices rise a future we realise
\nFor the beef from our own fields
\nLess grant dependent we are economically independent
\nAs we profit from our local yields.<\/p>\n

To plate from the grass green, little distance between
\nNo pollution from global transport
\nFarmers have a living fair, food can be afforded there
\nBeef sold from each land in it at its fair local worth!<\/p>\n

Let us refound the Land Commission and save our homes and farms in Ireland<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Of five farmers who had their lands taken by banks some three months ago, three committed suicide. This is the hidden cost of cheap beef, globalisation, the bank bailouts and capitalism in Ireland.
