There is a Longford tradition &#8211; referred to in my poem of two years ago &#8220;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.writingsinrhyme.com\/index.php\/sleeping-i-did-not-see-the-dancing-sun\/\">Sleeping I Did Not See the Dancing Sun<\/a><\/strong>&#8221; &#8211; that the sun dances for joy on Easter morning for the Resurrenction, only seen by those who have true faith. This was my first Easter to be up so early &#8211; being at work &#8211; and it was behind cloud!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>No dancing sun the Easter morning<br \/>\nAs the birds sing in the sky<br \/>\nI sleepy look out at the dawn<br \/>\nAs the clouds slowly roll by.<br \/>\nThe black gives way to a grey and blue<br \/>\nBehind which the sun fails to show<br \/>\nThat my grandfather said in the sky it dances<br \/>\nFor Easter all of those years ago.<\/p>\n<p>One hundred years ago now past<br \/>\nMen in Dublin sat confused<br \/>\nWho expected fighting to be<br \/>\nWondered was their plot by the British rused<br \/>\nAngered Eoin O&#8217; Neill sent out<br \/>\nThe word no rising was there to be<br \/>\nFrom home to home the messengers went round<br \/>\nTo tenament and cottage in the country.<\/p>\n<p>But country folk action would see<br \/>\nWho to the city their way had made<br \/>\nA hopeless gesture to fire the blood<br \/>\nOf a nation cowed and afraid.<br \/>\nThe nation rose in time as one<br \/>\nBut for all the won compared to what they saught<br \/>\nIt was as well, we bitter write today<br \/>\nIf those men brave risen had not.<\/p>\n<p>Neighbour against neighbour pitched<br \/>\nFreedom or the crown: which flag?<br \/>\nThere was freedom of culture and faith here now<br \/>\nOf which any Irishman could brag.<br \/>\nThe tenants woes were settled mostly<br \/>\nBar the labourers on the farm<br \/>\nIf the landlord was known the tenant to crush<br \/>\nHe in turn gave the Spailpin the strong arm.<\/p>\n<p>In time brother to brother would turn<br \/>\nThe Free State whether or not to accept<br \/>\nPartition, a nightmare to all sides, imposed<br \/>\nMost of Ulster by England kept.<br \/>\nA hundred years is passed by now<br \/>\nThir land is not their own<br \/>\nThe Union Jack is the flag of Derry and Belfast<br \/>\nIn a land still not their own.<\/p>\n<p>The lockout and the Liverpool ships<br \/>\nAre now but a memory<br \/>\nParagraph in a childs textbook<br \/>\nWho, bored, learns in school history.<br \/>\nThose who held the chains of power<br \/>\nThey are still in command<br \/>\nThe rich held onto their cash<br \/>\nProtestant landlords gone: isnt Ireland grand!<\/p>\n<p>People to the roads again have took<br \/>\nAs banks take the rooves over their head<br \/>\nThe farms from beneath their feet<br \/>\nFarmers distraught, by their own hand dead.<br \/>\nThe Proclamation was only words<br \/>\nFor which all that blood was shed<br \/>\nAll we changed was the flag on the stick<br \/>\nAs James Connolly prophetically said.<\/p>\n<p>On a Longford hillside my grandfather stood<br \/>\nMy father told me when I was a boy<br \/>\nOn an Easter morning as tradition it was<br \/>\nTo see the sun in the sky dance with joy.<br \/>\nOnly seen by those whose faith was true<br \/>\nHe claimed it to have seen<br \/>\nFew of his kind alive today<br \/>\nThat on those fields had been.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No dancing sun the Easter morning As the birds sing in the sky I sleepy look out at the dawn As the clouds slowly roll by.
