{"id":167,"date":"2013-06-11T15:16:42","date_gmt":"2013-06-11T15:16:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/writingsinrhyme.com\/?p=167"},"modified":"2014-08-11T15:18:57","modified_gmt":"2014-08-11T15:18:57","slug":"the-wrecking-of-ballinamuck","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/writingsinrhyme.com\/index.php\/the-wrecking-of-ballinamuck\/","title":{"rendered":"The Wrecking of Ballinamuck"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_2528\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2528\" style=\"width: 1255px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2528\" alt=\"The Village of Ballinamuck in Longford, the chapels spire can be seen which stands on the site of the mud walled church that was saved from the wrecking crew.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.writingsinrhyme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/The-Village-of-Ballinamuck.jpg\" width=\"1255\" height=\"298\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2528\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Village of Ballinamuck in Longford, the chapels spire can be seen which stands on the site of the mud walled church that was saved from the wrecking crew.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the years before the Famine,<br \/>\nGreedy Lord Lorton, God damn the nyeuck*<br \/>\nFor the love of money and hatred of man<br \/>\nCleared the town of Ballinamuck&#8230;<br \/>\nLevelled, all bar six houses and church left standing<br \/>\nThe latter only after a fight,<br \/>\nTo the cold, the young and old,<br \/>\nHad but the sky for shelter for the night.<\/p>\n<p>From the town of Boyle with the Police<br \/>\nFor safe escort the wreckers came<br \/>\nSleveens and other scum<br \/>\nWho knew neither God nor shame,<br \/>\nThe rights of Landlords protected in Ireland<br \/>\nRefuting Westmeaths and Loritins** charge<br \/>\nThe wrongs against the laws of God committed<br \/>\nTheir sins both grave and large.<\/p>\n<p>For God sees all, and Providence<br \/>\nCannot be used as a defense<br \/>\nThose who twist the words of Christ<br \/>\nKnow not God or any sense.<br \/>\nIn the pursuit of Mammon<br \/>\nAs they cast poor folk upon the road<br \/>\nThese folk of fortune ill gotton<br \/>\nFurther seeds of hatred sowed.<\/p>\n<p>Hatred it has a harvest,<br \/>\nAs was being reaped upon that time,<br \/>\nA harvest that is bitter,<br \/>\nLeads but to another crime,<br \/>\nNamesless now the victims.<br \/>\nTo most folk, but they have names here,<br \/>\nFor God, and all decent folk,<br \/>\nHold the names of the innocent dear.<\/p>\n<p>The Widow Nerheny died of a broken heart,<br \/>\nIt was the world, her little home, now gone,<br \/>\nShe was but one of the common folk,<br \/>\nShe was of those folk but one.<br \/>\nHer orphans to the charity of the world given,<br \/>\nAnd should such not be found,<br \/>\nIts the cruel rules of the world,<br \/>\nThey would join her in the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Folk feared for their lots and trembled,<br \/>\nNo hope for themselves they saw,<br \/>\nTheres no justice for Irishmen in Ireland,<br \/>\nAt least not under Britains law.<br \/>\nSo men took on themselves revenge to administer<br \/>\nEach in his own way,<br \/>\nHorrible harvests of hatred pure<br \/>\nWere reaped in the wake of this wretched day.<\/p>\n<p>With Courtenay, the soldiers came,<br \/>\nThe locals they offered a pound,<br \/>\nTo cover the scandal that had ensued,<br \/>\nIf they&#8217;d lever their own homes to the ground.<br \/>\nSome, knowing resistance was futile,<br \/>\nDid as they were bid to do,<br \/>\nTook the shillings as offered,<br \/>\nTheir actions for their lives they would rue.<\/p>\n<p>Other men, such as Patrick Hogan,<br \/>\nWho to hold his home was set,<br \/>\nFor on it hed speant all that he had,<br \/>\nAnd built it with his own sweat,<br \/>\nBut with an allmighty crash it came tumbling down,<br \/>\nSatisfied, the wreckers moved their sights<br \/>\nThere was no God in Ballinamuck<br \/>\nOn those dark autumn nights.<\/p>\n<p>These cruel men of no hearts, moved on<br \/>\nA mother of six, a Widow, named Donnelly was next<br \/>\nSix young, some crippled, more diseased, one she swore<br \/>\nAs is understandable, though a child she was, she was vexed.<br \/>\nFrom a pig shed they were evicted next,<br \/>\nAnd thrown under the open sky<br \/>\n&#8220;The heavens wept for them&#8221;
