No one said that about Muhammad Ali when he came to Ennis, so why are the knives out for Obama?<\/p>\n<p>I was at the visit of Obama to Dublin, and while I was not a fan of the pro capitalist speech that he made, I am glad to say that I went to see him in College Green. It is not that he is Kenyan and not Irish, or that he is Irish and not Kenyan, he is both, also has Flemish heritage through ancestors in Limerick from before they were in Moneygall&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>But some do not agree&#8230; even a fellow Tullamroe Rhymer <a href=\"https:\/\/cormacom.wordpress.com\/2013\/10\/23\/a-little-black-inside\">Cormac Lally has the alternative view<\/a> on it&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Who were they, some ask, the Black Irish?<br \/>\nDid they ever exist?<br \/>\nAre they just a passing feature of history<br \/>\nLost in the ancient mist?<br \/>\nDo they walk among us?<br \/>\nDoes their blood in our veins flow?<br \/>\nThese ancient people we have forgotten<br \/>\nFrom a long long time ago?<\/p>\n<p>What about those who DO live among us<br \/>\nI address this to the reader, the task<br \/>\nThat some say are not Irish being black<br \/>\nIs this right, I ask?<br \/>\nSome don&#8217;t like the fuss about Obama<br \/>\nThat hes Irish some flat our deny<br \/>\nThe connections too far back and hes Kenyan born<br \/>\nAnd is black &#8211; and they&#8217;re not racist, they explain as why.<\/p>\n<p>Some will listen to their Bob Marley<br \/>\nAs they smoke their spliffs in their beds<br \/>\nSome like to wear their hair in the non Irish<br \/>\nBut extremely cool hippie dreds<br \/>\nAnd they are cool and their Irish<br \/>\nBut dont dare approach them with the racist attack<br \/>\nSure Obama is as African as Obama<br \/>\nAll cause the poor fecker is black!<\/p>\n<p>No one doubts Paul McGrath is Irish<br \/>\nDeep to the core deep within<br \/>\nHes as white as the moon in the darkest of night<br \/>\nThough black is the colour of his skin.<br \/>\nSo if Obama learned to play soccer<br \/>\nWore proud the jersey of the green<br \/>\nNo one would doubt and all would forget about<br \/>\nAll bar his mother the Irish colleen!<\/p>\n<p>When Muhammad Ali came to Ennis<br \/>\nTo call him Irish was allowed<br \/>\nNo one said becuase he was black<br \/>\nTo be called Irish was not allowed.<br \/>\nBut sure he can fight like a Clareman<br \/>\nUp the wrong way no one would rub<br \/>\nYou could imagine him knocking out some eejit<br \/>\nWhen hed cross him over a girl in a pub!<\/p>\n<p>No one doubts Phil Lynott was Irish<br \/>\nGreat lad for the tunes and the craic<br \/>\nAnd sure he died of the heroin<br \/>\nWhich proves him as Irish though black.<br \/>\nSo if Barack takes up the fiddle<br \/>\nAnd learns to knock out Spancil Hill<br \/>\nThe demons might leave him be for a while<br \/>\nWhen of venting their bile they have had their fill!<\/p>\n<p>Why cant we see beyond racist politics<br \/>\nThat we can be racist too cant we see<br \/>\nIts not just the French and the British<br \/>\nAmong the owrst us Irish can be.<br \/>\nWe were slaves and we were slavers<br \/>\nLets call all Irish no matter the colour of skin<br \/>\nLike Luther King said let us look to the man<br \/>\nIs he a good or bad Irish character within!<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Glossary<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Black Irish:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(1) A people of Monserrat and the Carribean, descendants of Irish and blacks.
