In those times, heads were taken as trophies &#8211; yes right up to Adamnan&#8217;s day, and of women fighters, breasts were chopped off too. We were a lovely people back then, no? <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Among these ruins where Ivy grows<br \/>\nGripping crevices in old stone walls<br \/>\nHistory in Europe once was written<br \/>\nNeath these arches from where jackdaws calls<br \/>\nBreaks the chilly December air<br \/>\nAs by these ruins I now pass<br \/>\nAdamnans church in the town of Birr<br \/>\nNo longer echos the sounds of mass<br \/>\nThe sermon, the songs, the sobs of funerals<br \/>\nBefore these stones commemorated the dead<br \/>\nOver which the grass grows as if they were not there<br \/>\nAs if their funeral masses were never said.<\/p>\n<p>Back then, Ireland was an Amazon race<br \/>\n&#8211; Of Scythian blood, it is no wonder<br \/>\nSome say the Amazons were Scythian in their legendary time &#8211;<br \/>\nWho in rage of battle ripped each other asunder<br \/>\nWomen too fought like men<br \/>\nRecorded in legend like Queen Maeve<br \/>\nFew after Adamnans laws wielded the sword<br \/>\nUnlike Grainne Mhaol the brave<br \/>\nBut those who did, when heads were collected<br \/>\nHad their breasts cut off, as trophy&#8217;s taken<br \/>\nSuch was the savagery of the fight tose days<br \/>\nAll honour and gentility foresaken&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Among these ruins, a lerned man<br \/>\nWrote long before the league of Nations, a warriors code<br \/>\nLong before womens liberation, gave women rights<br \/>\nWho heretofor to battle rode<br \/>\nBut now in the name of equality<br \/>\nFrom Afghanistan out to Iraq<br \/>\nA world has forgotten the wisdom of those times<br \/>\nAs the warrior woman in battle is back.<br \/>\nSome time to come when conscription<br \/>\nAffects women globally as men<br \/>\nWill women, who do not want to go to the unavoidable fight<br \/>\nRemember Adamnan and his wise laws again?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Its just another ruined church to some, but St Brendans Old Church in Birr is where a little known Irish saint wrote modern Europes first rules of war, and womens rights in battle, and not to fight in war, which is being eroded today.
